Full Description

XT40 celebrates QED's 40 years of award winning British heritage. Winner of 'Best speaker cable' at the 2014 What Hi-Fi? Awards. X-TUBE™ TECHNOLOGY

At low frequencies both X-TubeTM and conventional stranded/solid core speaker cables convey signals in a linear way. However, at high frequencies, X-TubeTM retains a near-linear signal transfer, whereas the conventional cable fails to conduct uniformly across the entire conductor area. The result is that X-TubeTM delivers greater detail and fidelity across the audio spectrum which would other wise be lost in ordinary cables. LARGE cross-sectional area: The 4mm2 cross sectional area means XT40 exhibits very low resistance, allowing amplifiers to exert outstanding control over the speakers they are driving. In addition, its large cross sectional area makes it suitable for long cable runs.

XT40 strong points:
- Crystal clear tweeter
-silky vocals
- separations of vocals and instruments are noticeable and clearer and clean
- music listening as a whole is more coherent and controlled and not out of sync.

XT40 downside based on my hearing:
- Bass is a little lean but cleaner compare to my existing X-Brands which has a more rounded volume .

I ended up Bi -Amping my system : mid and tweeter connected to XT40 and woofers connected to the X-Brand speaker cables. It offered me an excellent vocals and silky , clean hi's and a rounded good bass. It could have been a 5 stars if XT40 bass is a bit more rounded and pronounced. So I am giving it a 4.5 . Its a compromise and bottom line , I still smile every time I listen to my system . I bought 4 pairs saving one extra pair for another unit in the future . (Posted on 2/27/2018)
Worth every nickel Review by T
I've always been skeptical about high end speaker cables. I never thought it could possibly make THAT much of a difference...and most of the time, in my experience, it doesn't. However, I'm buying some new higher end bookshelf speakers and I wanted to treat them to a nicer cable than the Ixos I was currently running. After reading a bunch of reviews, I settled on the QED Reference XT40, primarily due to really positive sentiment from multiple sources around the web.

The first thing I noticed was that these cables are built extremely well. Removing them from the packaging, you immediately feel the heft of the cable itself, but also the beefy bananas...literally the best banana plugs I've ever seen. They could look a little nicer if they were all metal instead of coated in the red and black rubber, but they still look and feel extremely high quality. The tip of the plug that goes into the terminal also has a little mechanism that pushes into the plug once inserted, and I assume this is to create a nice, tight fit. The plugs fit perfectly into my receiver terminals, but my speaker terminals were too shallow so they only go in ¾ of the way. No matter. The jacket on the cable itself is a pearl look, sort of white/clear, nothing fancy but looks clean.

I am currently demoing a pair of speakers from my short list. I thought they sounded great with some material, but overly bright with a lot of the music I was playing. Wasn't impressed. This was while running them on my old Ixos cable through a Marantz SR6010. My QED cables arrived while I had these speakers in my possession so I had a great opportunity to see if they truly made a difference while I was listening with a critical ear. The difference was heard immediately. The harshness that I had heard before was now gone. The same songs that were almost unlistenable due to the overly bright sound, were now smooth and mellow, but still crisp sounding. I wasn't able to notice a major difference on the bottom end, but the overall sound signature completely changed in the mids and treble. I'm impressed.

QED had said that they'd put this cable up against any cable on the market and feel confident that it was as good or better. I can't speak to that, but I can tell you that these are worth the price of admission. They actually made a difference in the sound...a big difference in my case. I may not buy those speakers, but I'm definitely keeping these QED cables. Highly recommended. (Posted on 7/21/2017)
